My saving grace in high school.

The one place I could walk in every day and everything else would fall away when the first note rang out. Every child should have something like that. Something that inspires them to reach into their soul and give everything they’ve got … to be a part of something magical.

Several years ago I had the opportunity to attend a fundraiser for an organization that provides just that kind of opportunity for children here in Denver. That day, Ballet Nouveau Colorado showed me how they touch the lives of children every day.

And now Ballet Nouveau Colorado needs our help to stay alive. I received an e-mail a couple weeks ago talking of the difficult economic climate and how it has affected BNC. Without raising what seems an insurmountable sum by the end of July, the organization will have to close its doors, and hundreds of children will have to find other dance programs, and a few may not be able to dance anymore. This is a story that sings to me … it tells of the kids at Ballet Nouveau Colorado who have been touched so deeply, changed for the better and who may be cast aside if this organization doesn’t raise close to $190,000 by July 30^th. It is quite an honor when a talented photographer calls to have their family portraits taken. So often, photographers are the last ones in front of the camera. Many of us are either preserving memories with our cameras or are taking a break from holding a camera. It is so important to take the time and make the investment in having pictures taken and memories preserved. Life is fleeting and the images we have of our children and family are so much more than beautiful art. They provide memories in the best of times, but also when life takes unexpected turns. It is important to make the time, save the money and find someone you love to create images that will last a lifetime. Mary Elizabeth Graff called me for just that reason. She is always behind her camera creating beautiful images for other people … it was a joy to create images for her and her family. Take a peek at her gorgeous boys …

Summer. My kids have already constructed forts and secret hiding places in the backyard … started a band called, “Baylor’s Loaded Diaper,” complete with band posters and lyrics … are contemplating starting their own pet sitting business … have listened to the Annie soundtrack enough times that they stomp around the house saying, “I want you to clean this dump til it shines like the top of the Chrysler building!” I love the streaks of highlight in their chlorine-infused hair, the ever-darkening tanlines despite the bottles and bottles of sunscreen applied and the sweet way that our days have fallen into a somewhat slower pace and much more mellow routine. I love this time of year.

This is one of the first family sessions I had after returning from Santa Barbara … and I loved every minute of it! I love spending time with families. It is a gift each family shares with me … a little sliver of time never to be regained, but to be treasured forever with beautiful images. Eli’s Mom and Dad love this little guy so much and he was a delight to hang with. I love, love, love this age. Perhaps because I am in the midst of it with my own daughter, or perhaps because toddlers this age are just yummy and hysterical and fun to be around. I loved seeing the world through Eli’s eyes, and I know you will, too!

The holiday season is definitely upon me … so in the rush of getting slideshows to everyone, some of my blog posts will be out of order (I’ll putting some post-sneaks up!). Just so you know!

When I traveled to Santa Barbara at the end of September for a FANTASTIC workshop with Jesh DeRox, I also had the opportunity for my first on-location out-of-state session. Allison and Charlie met me (with their mom, Melissa) at the old Santa Barbara Mission … a beautiful place to play with beautiful kids! Melissa is a friend of a friend, and I feel super lucky to have met her and spent time with her. Can’t wait until you come out to Colorado, Melissa! This is Montana. Her session was a surprise for her mommy and daddy so I’m hoping you can keep a secret! Aunt Shelly called me to take pictures while Montana stayed with her for the weekend. Shelly had pics of her boys taken last fall and was tickled with them … so while mom and dad attended an out-of-state wedding we snuck this in. Can’t wait for them to see (Aunt Shelly promised mom and dad weren’t stalking my blog yet, so I think I’m safe). Montana’s cousin is featured at the top of this blog (the sweet little boy with the HUGE blue eyes) … cuteness must run in the family. Here you go, Shelly!

Today is my son’s 7th birthday. As I hear so often from friends, family and clients … the time flies so fast. There are many times I forget just what he was like as a baby. Just one of the many reasons why I am instituting yearly birthday photos of my own children. Decker and I had a fun time taking these pics at a local park. As Brian reminded D today, this isn’t just a day to for him to celebrate his birthday … it is a day for me to celebrate carrying him for 9 months and bringing him into this world and a day for Brian to cherish those first few breaths and all the ones in between. We love you, Decker!
