It is quite an honor when a talented photographer calls to have their family portraits taken. So often, photographers are the last ones in front of the camera. Many of us are either preserving memories with our cameras or are taking a break from holding a camera. It is so important to take the time and make the investment in having pictures taken and memories preserved. Life is fleeting and the images we have of our children and family are so much more than beautiful art. They provide memories in the best of times, but also when life takes unexpected turns. It is important to make the time, save the money and find someone you love to create images that will last a lifetime. Mary Elizabeth Graff called me for just that reason. Isaac is a big brother now. If you have been following my blog, you’ll remember Stephana, the adorable little girl that Isaac’s family adopted from Haiti. Stephana joined Isaac a little sooner than expected, due to the devastating earthquake in Haiti this past January. It has been a delight to watch as Stephana adapts to her new family and home … she is definitely coming out of her shell (and is completely in love with her big brother). I am posting a couple sneak peeks here, but will continue the story over on my Lenses of Love blog … dedicated to giving the gift of photography to others. Summer. My kids have already constructed forts and secret hiding places in the backyard … started a band called, “Baylor’s Loaded Diaper,” complete with band posters and lyrics … are contemplating starting their own pet sitting business … have listened to the Annie soundtrack enough times that they stomp around the house saying, “I want you to clean this dump til it shines like the top of the Chrysler building!” I love the streaks of highlight in their chlorine-infused hair, the ever-darkening tanlines despite the bottles and bottles of sunscreen applied and the sweet way that our days have fallen into a somewhat slower pace and much more mellow routine. I love this time of year.

{ first day of school }

My son, Decker, is off for his first day of second-grade today. And if Facebook is a good barometer, most children are now back in school. His elementary school is one place I love sending him. I know he is learning and growing and becoming a passionate learner and a compassionate human being. I feel very grateful today to be sending him to a place that values independent, deep thinking. If last year is any indication of how this year will go, I am so excited for him! His younger sisters and I walked him to school. Ridley (5) will be starting kindergarten on Wednesday (so more first day pics to come … maybe with a blurry lens from a few tears) and felt a little sad when dropping him off. She wanted to hold his hand on the way and got in a few hugs before the bell rang. Without further ado …

I’d like to say I’m off for a nap, but a 5-year-old and almost-2-year-old await!

One of the best parts of my job is the fantastic people I work with on a a daily basis. Kristin and her husband own the wonderful Cucina Colore in Cherry Creek and just opened two more restaurants. Mom went about her day when I arrived so I literally got to hang out with Sofia and Matteo and play … which made for even better pictures because we made the BEST noises and talked about the grossest things (I will never travel without a whoopie cushion again!).

My poor husband. Every time I come home from a session I fret about getting enough good pictures. I’ve done this since I started the business a year ago. While the feeling has somewhat diminished, it hasn’t gone away. So his first response is always, “Go download and look at your stuff.” This session was no different. so I was so pleased when I opened up my files and found some absolutely adorable pictures! These two kiddos are my Mom’s best friends grandkids (did you follow that?) So darling. I’m starting with my new favorite family photo:
