Last fall I hired a studio manager. It was one of the best decisions I made for my business all year. Kat helped me keep my schedule straight and my sanity in tact during a very bust fall season. She has been a true gift. So it is with great fanfare that I introduce you to Kat’s newest addition to her family, Evan. I was fortunate enough to have time to snuggle with this little guy when he was about one week new. Kat and I both found ourselves hormonally challenged while pregnant, with a swift return to normal after giving birth … so here’s to having a beautiful baby and no more crazy hormones, Kat! Sending you and your family lots of love.

It is quite an honor when a talented photographer calls to have their family portraits taken. So often, photographers are the last ones in front of the camera. Many of us are either preserving memories with our cameras or are taking a break from holding a camera. It is so important to take the time and make the investment in having pictures taken and memories preserved. Life is fleeting and the images we have of our children and family are so much more than beautiful art. They provide memories in the best of times, but also when life takes unexpected turns. It is important to make the time, save the money and find someone you love to create images that will last a lifetime. Mary Elizabeth Graff called me for just that reason. She is always behind her camera creating beautiful images for other people … it was a joy to create images for her and her family. Take a peek at her gorgeous boys …

As I sat in front of my television watching the horrific images from Haiti play over and over … I knew I wanted to do something. We have three beautiful children ages 7 and under, and adopting a beautiful child from Haiti wasn’t an option for us at this point in our journey. But I do have two friends who were in the process of adopting a baby girl from Haiti the earthquake ripped through the already impoverished nation earlier this month. I can only imagine the sleepless nights spent worrying about whether their daughter had food, shelter and water and what kind of trauma she was going through.

Last week my friends flew to Pittsburgh to pick up their angel, a beautiful 11-month-old named Stephana. While their story has a happy ending, there are still many children stuck in Haiti who desperately need help. Due to the urgency of this situation, I am embarking on a journey here in Denver to raise money for Kentucky Adoption Services … an organization that is helping orphans in Port-au-Prince. I have created a group called Lenses of Love and I am asking today to ask for your help and participation.

You get beautiful images AND help the orphans in Haiti. Book your Limited Edition Lenses of Love session by February 14th (you have until April 30th to have your session with me) and I will donate 100% of the sitting fee to Kentucky Adoption Services. I am offering a special sitting fee for this fundraiser of $150 (normally $250). I have a limited number of sessions available so book today … just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Lenses of Love sessions include:

phone consultation to answer questions and discuss location and clothing
a full 1-2 hour session with me
35-40 fully-edited images posted to an online slideshow

It gets even better … for every Lenses of Love session I book, I will be donating a mini-session to families in town who have adopted children from Haiti.

This is one of the first family sessions I had after returning from Santa Barbara … and I loved every minute of it! I love spending time with families. It is a gift each family shares with me … a little sliver of time never to be regained, but to be treasured forever with beautiful images. Eli’s Mom and Dad love this little guy so much and he was a delight to hang with. I love, love, love this age. Perhaps because I am in the midst of it with my own daughter, or perhaps because toddlers this age are just yummy and hysterical and fun to be around. I loved seeing the world through Eli’s eyes, and I know you will, too!

The holiday season is definitely upon me … so in the rush of getting slideshows to everyone, some of my blog posts will be out of order (I’ll putting some post-sneaks up!). Just so you know!

When I traveled to Santa Barbara at the end of September for a FANTASTIC workshop with Jesh DeRox, I also had the opportunity for my first on-location out-of-state session. Allison and Charlie met me (with their mom, Melissa) at the old Santa Barbara Mission … a beautiful place to play with beautiful kids! Melissa is a friend of a friend, and I feel super lucky to have met her and spent time with her. Can’t wait until you come out to Colorado, Melissa! This is Montana. Her session was a surprise for her mommy and daddy so I’m hoping you can keep a secret! Aunt Shelly called me to take pictures while Montana stayed with her for the weekend. Shelly had pics of her boys taken last fall and was tickled with them … so while mom and dad attended an out-of-state wedding we snuck this in. Can’t wait for them to see (Aunt Shelly promised mom and dad weren’t stalking my blog yet, so I think I’m safe). Montana’s cousin is featured at the top of this blog (the sweet little boy with the HUGE blue eyes) … cuteness must run in the family. Here you go, Shelly!

My son, Decker, is off for his first day of second-grade today. And if Facebook is a good barometer, most children are now back in school. His elementary school is one place I love sending him. I know he is learning and growing and becoming a passionate learner and a compassionate human being. I feel very grateful today to be sending him to a place that values independent, deep thinking. If last year is any indication of how this year will go, I am so excited for him! His younger sisters and I walked him to school. Ridley (5) will be starting kindergarten on Wednesday (so more first day pics to come … maybe with a blurry lens from a few tears) and felt a little sad when dropping him off. She wanted to hold his hand on the way and got in a few hugs before the bell rang. Without further ado …

I’d like to say I’m off for a nap, but a 5-year-old and almost-2-year-old await!

Today is my son’s 7th birthday. As I hear so often from friends, family and clients … the time flies so fast. There are many times I forget just what he was like as a baby. Just one of the many reasons why I am instituting yearly birthday photos of my own children. Decker and I had a fun time taking these pics at a local park. As Brian reminded D today, this isn’t just a day to for him to celebrate his birthday … it is a day for me to celebrate carrying him for 9 months and bringing him into this world and a day for Brian to cherish those first few breaths and all the ones in between. We love you, Decker!
